But this is her best book yet; instead of the procedural mystery or the character-driven thriller, she’s moved to one of my favorite subgenres: noir. Lippman thanks one of my favoritesâ€"James M. Cain, author of The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity among other classicsâ€"in the Acknowledgments and she’s created a novel that has the best of the old school noir style with a modern feminist narrative where no one is quite what they seem. She grew up in the 1600s, when most believed that insects spontaneously arose from mud, dung, or dead things. She studied flowers and drew them, being one of the first artists to include insects in her artwork. Merian was also one of the first to document the metamorphosis of the butterfly as well as one of the first female entomologists in her field. The book is informative and accessible to middle grade readers, and it is filled with beautiful illustrations done by the Merian herself. Zaid is fierce, a rebel with a cause, and her breathtaking leaps of imagination make new worlds possible.” Tiffany Hall A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena (February 27, Farrar, Straus and Giroux Books for Young Readers): Typically, I’m not one for intense contemporary reads, but A Girl Like That has seemed to completely ensnare meâ€"this is a novel I can’t wait to get my hands on. Following a sixteen-year-old girl, Zarin Wadia, with quite a reputation, this debut shines a light on many important topics like race, adolescent struggle, and identity. Not only that, but the stakes are all the higher when Zarin and another teen are found dead in a crashed car. To paint a full portrait of who Zarin was beyond a girl “like that,” Bhathena employs the use of a few different perspectives, which makes it all the more appealing. Part mystery, part contemporary, this novel will certainly be in my hands as soon as it hits the shelves. Tirzah Price Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman (February 27, Random House Books for Young Readers): Rachel Hartman’s dragons in Seraphina and Shadow Scale fascinated me, but her lively characters and spectacular world-building were what made her a must-read author for me. I’m so excited to meet Tess and return to Goredd for another grand adventureâ€"so much so that I’ve caught myself daydreaming about this book multiple times in the last few months. Also, that cover!! And I’m intrigued by the conflict of a Taiwanese American girl trying to balance her own self knowledge with the expectations her parents have set for her. Camp Forevermore is a sleep-away camp, a place of friendship and adventure, but for five young girls, their week will quickly go horribly wrong. In between chapters about what happens to the girls that week at camp are stories of the lives of each of the girls, from when they’re young up to present day, and how their traumatic experience shaped them. This is one of those books that immediately breaks your heart and then makes you feel like the rest of the words in the book are the glue you desperately need to keep it from coming completely apart. It’s beautiful and devastating. Katie McLain Force of Nature by Jane Harper (February 6, Flatiron Books): The sequel to last year’s super amazing, dark, Tana Frenchâ€"esque mystery, The Dry follows Police Agent Aaron Falk as he searches for a missing hiker who may or may not have come to harm at the hands of her coworkers. Everyone who’s read an early copy of this book says it’s just as good as The Dry, if not better, and I cannot WAIT to get my hands on it! Rachel Brittain Flight Season by Marie Marquardt (February 20, Wednesday Books): This book is sweet and moving and lovely and such a good example of how YA can mix a heartfelt story with really serious issues. The book follows Vivi, TJ, and Ángel, three teenagers who come from very different worlds but are brought together at the hospital were Vivi and TJ are interning and where Ángel is slowly dying of heart failure. Flight Season is about the enduring power of friendship, but it also deals with grief, illness, immigration, and deportation. It’ll break your heart and then slowly put it back together again. Margaret Kingsbury The Rending and the Nest by Kaethe Schwehn (February 20, Bloomsbury USA): Can there be too many post-apocalyptic novels? For me, the answer is no, though I am picky about what I like. The Rending and the Nest has an interesting premise: after some sort of apocalypse, women start giving birth to inanimate objects. Sounds delightfully weird! It’s being compared to both California (which I was iffy on) and Station Eleven (which I loved), so I’ll just have to see. I must admit, part of what draws me to this one is that I have my own little one right now, so I’m interested in anything about babies! Kate Scott What Are We Doing Here? By Marilynne Robinson (February 20, Farrar, Straus, Giroux): Ever since the 2016 election, the relationship between politics and faith (and all the ways it can go wrong) has been on my mind. In this essay collection, Robinson examines America’s current political, cultural, and religious condition. As I work my way through Robinson’s bibliography, I find myself frequently disagreeing with her conclusions; however, I am continuously drawn back to her work in spite of my misgivings. Perhaps this is because she is such an eloquent writer or perhaps it is because she paints an aspirational vision of Christianity that I wish to be true. Regardless, I will be first in line to read this book. Danielle Bourgon Song of a Captive Bird by Jasmin Darznik (February 13, Ballantine Books): A novel that is set to tell the story of an infamous female poet from Iran, whom I have never heard of. The author, Jasmin Darznik, has done a heap of research and prepared a novel to tell the story of Forugh Farrokhzad. It even includes new translations of selected poems! I just started falling down the poetry rabbit hole in the last few years and I love a good memoir so this seems like it’s going to be right in my current wheelhouse. Adiba Jaigirdar The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton (February 6, Disney-Hyperion): This is probably one of the most talked about book of 2018. Set in a fantasy world where people are born gray and only the Belles can make them beautiful, The Belles is a story about power, secrets, and the cost of beauty. It’s also been highly praised by Roxane Gayâ€"which makes me want to read it even more! Christina Vortia An American Marriage: A Novel by Tayari Jones (February 6, Algonquin Books): I’m really excited to read Tayari Jones’s new novel. She is a master at developing nuanced characters and crafting narratives with intricate plots. This novel, about successful newlyweds who rapidly find themselves at an intersection of crime and punishment, guilt and ignorance, loyalty and infidelity is sure to be illuminating. I cant wait to pull back the layers with this one. Aimee Miles The Serpent’s Secret by Sayantani DasGupta (February 27, Scholastic): Kiranmala is just a regular twelve year old in New Jersey until her parents disappear and demons from their stories appear. She has to unravel the family secrets, stay alive, and save her parents (and the world). I am here for any twelve year old girls who take on the role of demonslayer, and I am particularly interested that Kiranmala is interacting with a different culture’s mythology than has been popularly seen. As an fyi, this book was hit by one-star trolls, as children’s books by POC are wont to receive; take any star-ratings with a grain of salt. Rabeea Saleem The Clarity by Keith Thomas (February 20, Atria): If you’re a Black Mirror fan like me then you’ll love this chilling speculative thriller. A psychologist who is researching how we form memories must protect the life of a young girl who remembers past lives. Tautly plotted and well researched, this book is a riveting take on the possibility of afterlife and reincarnation. Erin McCoy The Bastard’s Bargain by Katee Robert (February 6, Grand Central Publishing): In this conclusion to Robert’s The O’Malley series we finally get to see Dmitri and Keira together. I wasn’t a big Dmitri fan until the fifth book of this series, but after seeing him go all-out to protect Keira in Undercover Attraction I’m officially a member of the Romanov fan club. I’ll be sad to see this series end since it not only introduced me to Robert’s exceptionally provocative writing, this series has also given me some of my favorite mobster hero and heroines to date. This was a joy to read. Brandi Bailey The House of Impossible Beauties by Joseph Cassara (February 6, Ecco): The gritty glamour of New York in the 80s and the club scene is fascinating to me. I’m not sure why this book is calling my name so hard, but I know I need to read it. Set in the LGBTQ+ community at the dawn of the AIDS crisis is going to make this read an emotional rollercoaster, I’m sure. I’m especially excited because this novel is an #ownvoices choice. Cassara has talked about the amount of research he undertook to make sure his 1980 Harlem setting is as authentic as possible. Jaime Herndon Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday (February 6, Simon Schuster): I love when writers use form in a different way, and Halliday has two novellas that discuss relationships and various power imbalances. The first concerns a young editor and an older writer; the second is about an Iraqi-American economist detained in Heathrow. Though initially seeming separate and discrete, the two work together and connect. I just started it, but I’m loving it. Tasha Brandstatter Hello, Stranger by Lisa Kleypas (February 27, Avon): Kleypas’s latest series has been a little hit-or-miss for me, but I’m looking forward to this book starring a 19th-century female physician. Hopefully the mystery is as well-developed as the romance. Kim Ukura The Line Becomes a River by Francisco Cantú (February 6, Riverhead): Between 2008 and 2012, Francisco Cantú was an agent with the U.S. Border Patrol, working along the Mexican border to prevent both drugs and people from entering the country. Cantú eventually asks to return to a desk job, finding the stress and guilt of the job to be too much, but he finds himself pulled back into the debate over immigration when an undocumented friend is arrested at the border. I love finding personal stories that help explain big picture issues, so I think this one will be right up my alley. Natalya Muncuff A Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole (February 27, Avon Books): Most of us have gotten (and rolled our eyes) at the emails stating weve won a large lump sum of money or some other seemingly enticing reward. We know its fake so we immediately delete it. However, I know Im not the only one who has entertained the idea that one of them could be true. A grad school student receiving emails saying shes betrothed to an African prince, and its true? Sounds like a winning plot to me! I cannot wait to be back in this ethereal world. Shadowsong is the conclusion of this duology by S. Jae-Jones and I have a mighty need to see what Liesl is up against in the world above now that she’s survived the Underground. My body is ready for more goblins and minor keys. Jessica Avery The Lucky Ones by Tiffany Reisz (February 13, MIRA Books): Tiffany Reisz has been at the top of my auto-buy list for something like six years now. I would run out of words before I could successfully explain how beautiful and nuanced her novels are. The Lucky Ones is her latest addition, and she’s returning to some of the Gothic elements that made her book from a few years ago, The Bourbon Thief, so incredible. Impending tragedy brings lead character Allison back to the strange, idyllic home that she grew up in as an orphan. The coastal Oregon beach house ominously named Dragon. Ghosts of the past and horrific secrets abound, and I’m ready to be enthralled. Michelle Hart Self-Portrait with Boy by Rachel Lyon (February 6, Scribner): I’m wary of novels about artists set in Brooklyn, but I was blown away by Rachel Lyon’s debut about an aspiring photographer who, while taking the 1990s equivalent of a selfie, captures on film the accidental suicide of her neighbor, a young boy. Eerie and exquisitely composed, the image could launch her career, but she wrestles with the emotional and moral costs of using another family’s tragedy for her own gain. Things get even more confusing for her when she begins a very intimate relationship with the boy’s mother. I’m particularly excited because it includes the voices of trans and gender-nonconforming people, who are far too often left out of the conversation when it comes to abortion and reproductive rights. A male’s sense of powerlessness during the abuse has a greater probability of being channeled into aggressive sexual behavior wherein the victim will transform to become the offender (Clarke 141). Boys who were sexually molested may become the molesters themselves basing from criminal reports that sexual offenders were said to having been sexually abused when they were young. The link between early abuse and later crime was proven to be caused by exposure of traumatic influences (West 539). Many of these men discover unsettling anger within themselves expressed in forms of violent fantasies or rage. For some men, snapping results in perpetration of considerable violence (Lisak 525-548). For a minority of men, the need to be in control drove them to victimize other people especially with helpless kids as was once their experience. It was clarified in the intergenerational transmission theory that parents who were victims in their families of orientation will manifest reenactment of observed behavior from parents in their families of procreation. My mother had an outgoing personality, but she also had many other personalities. What mother doesnt? Most of all she is a very understanding woman. You couldnt ask for a better person. She worked several different Jobs while I was growing up. The last Job she worked was Dollar General. She started off Just being a sales clerk in 2003. Then a few years later she became store manager. My opinion you couldnt ask for a better manager. There were days she worked open to close, because one of the employees couldnt make it in. She was working on her seventh or eighth year when she started having problems. Her lower back started hurting bad and legs were starting to swell. She had been to the doctor several times, but all they kept giving her was pain pills. The actor said he would order an MR. and never did. After messing with this doctor for about six months to a year, my sister and I got tired of her hurting all the time and found a new doctor. A better doctor at that. She treated mom a lot better. Mom explained what was going on, and within a week she had and MR. scheduled for her. The MR. came back showing something on her kidney. So following that they done a biopsy. We had to wait at least two weeks before we found out the results. It wasnt good news. The spot on her right kidney came back as cancerous. It ended up being a three inch mass. We went to doctors after doctors to see what would be best for her. After seeing several doctors and running more test they had found more cancer. Three spots on her skull (not her brain). Some on her spine and one rib. The kidney doctor told us if she didnt do anything with the kidney she only had an estimate of five years. The neurologist said that if they didnt get her back taken care of as soon as possible, she wouldnt be walking in two to three months. She wasnt having that. So on May 25th, 2012 she went into surgery for a long seven hours. She obviously lulled through it. It has been a long recovery. Her back still hasnt healed up and its been over a year. We have been fighting stash infections ever since the back surgery. After her being out back in the hospital for the fourth or fifth time, we decided it was time to find different doctors. We even switched hospitals completely. Mom does have a wound Vic on and has for quite a while and will have until the chemotherapy and diabetes. Those make it even harder for a wound to heal. It has made a huge progress since this all started. Its been over a year since all this has appended and shes doing a lot better. Like I said shes a fighter. She has done ten treatments of radiation. Then started taking chemo through her port. It has been prolonged several times from having the infections and surgeries and being in the hospital. Just recently she got to take the wound Vic off for a week. The doctors called it a vacation for her, because it was starting to deteriorate her skin around her wound. Her chemo doctor had taken a look at her wound and thought it looked bad. Granted he hadnt seen it for over a month or longer so he hadnt seen the progress it was doing. He thought it look horrible. He demanded that she get put back in the hospital. So I rushed her down there the same day. He wanted her there by two but that didnt happen. I had to bring her back home and get clothes gathered up for her and other things, because we didnt know how long they were going to keep her. We ended up getting there about five pm and got her signed in and put in her room. They put her in isolation, which we didnt understand. After we seen the nurses and asked why, they told us it was because she previously had stash infection. Which was very understandable. Mom ended up being in there for three days Wednesday through Saturday. All her doctors had been in there to see her and none of them could figure out why she was even in the Im glad it happened though. The doctors ended up running bone scans, EMIRS and x-rays. They ended up finding more cancer in her right leg below her knee. Also found out her fibula is broken. The doctors couldnt explain how it got broken, but with her bones being so weak from the chemo, it could have been anything. They also found some abnormalities in her lower back. The doctors wasnt 100% sure if it was cancer either. I took her down on Wednesday and they let her out that following Saturday. The following Monday they started radiation on her lower back Just to be on the safe side and on her right leg. She got five treatments on her leg and ten on her back. When they done the scans on her they found out the chemo through the iv wasnt working cue her cancer had gotten bigger. After it had shrunk a little bit. So now the chemo doctor wants to put her on the chemo pill and hope and prays that it works. Vive not eared very good things about the chemo pill. I Just hope it does her good. When we found out that mom had cancer the one thing she said she wanted before something happened to her, was that her two daughters give her grandchildren. A little boy and a little girl. After both my sister and I got told we couldnt have kids. To our surprise we both ended up having grandchildren for her. We found out on Christmas that my sister was pregnant. So that was part of moms Christmas present. Then I found out I was pregnant on mothers day, so that was her mothers day present from me. My sister was due September 2nd and ended up having her little girl a month early. I was due the day before moms birthday and I ended up having my little boy on my dads birthday, three days after Christmas. God must work in mysterious ways because mom got what she wanted. Today. If it wasnt for my mother I wouldnt be who I am today and where I am at in life. She is such a wonderful person and I love her very much. These objects may be admired and appreciated in several different ways but what we see may not be the view of the artist who made it centuries ago. There were relics of the past that has shown history. There are objects that we may consider today as an object of art but what we see is just a small fraction of what it has been to the people where it had been before. It may represent what culture it came from, what trials did the creator of the object had gone through to make something that would subsist through the years to be appreciated and be treasured in the present time. In most histories, there were always things found that represents what kind of life they have lived, murals that tells the sto ry of our ancestors existence just like a diary in the present time. In the history of Spain there existed a group of minorities which made an impact in the countrys history religiously and artistically. Mozarabs were Iberlian Christians living in Al-andalus, a nation in the Iberian Peninsula. The term Mozarabic is derived from the word mustarib or mustarab which came from the Arab root word araba, meaning in the active sense, to make oneself similar to the arabs or having assimilated Arabic customs or most specifically designating someone who had the appearance of an Arab, was indistinguishable from the Arabs, an would not stand out in the crowd of Arabs (Corominas 244). It was a term derived to call the Christians who lived in the control of the Muslim lands and avoid confusion among old Christians who resided in Al-andalus and other Christians. Although Spain was Muslim in that period (711-1492), Mozarabs were treated good-naturedly, though they remain unconverted to Islam and didnt actually enjoy equal rights. A few agreed to be converted to Islam to avoid the heavy tax being subjected to them. The conversion also opened opportunities for them to make a better living and alleviate their status in the society since they were in a Muslim community. They have adopted Arab customs, culture and Arabic language. Christians lived in a separate community; they had their own government, and paid a special tax in place of the requirement made of Muslims to serve in the army. There were Mozarab women who married Muslim men and their children were raised as Muslims. Mozarabic was the romance language they spoke (Hitchcock 12). This language was first documented in the Peninsula in the form of choruses or kharjas in Arabic and Hebrew lyrics called muwashshahs. Even though Arabs were driven out of Spain at the end of 15th century and the language has died out, it is sometimes claimed that Mozarabic has left its mark on the dialects of Southern Spain and Portugal. In their time, Mozarabs never call their language as Mozarabics nor themselves as Mozarabs. At times Christian communities prospered in Muslim Spain; these Christians are now usually referred to as Mozà ¡rabes, although the term was not in use at the time (Hitchcock 1978). Historians started calling them Mozarabs only in the 19th century referring to the Christians who lived under the Muslim rules in the Iberian Peninsula during the middle ages. The Mozarabs had ritual worships in the Catholic Church which was Mozarabic Liturgy. It was most celebrated on Sundays and on great feasts. The Mozarabic rite is the second-best most attested preserved documented liturgy in the Latin Church; the first is the Roman rite. The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary is emphasized in their rites more than that of the Romans. They were also the first to use ashes within the liturgical celebrations. Mozarabic Liturgy is also called Gothic-Spanish, Isidorian and Toledian (Gihr 334). Many of the existing manuscripts of these rites are in cathedral Chapter Library at Toledo. There were manuscripts found by the cardinal in the library of the cathedral in Toledo in 1502 as mentioned by Gomez to his edition of Brevarium Gothicum which was published in Madrid, 1775. These manuscripts were one of the magnificent Mozarabic arts preserved from their time. It was said that these manuscripts were written in old Gothic characters and related to the ancient Spanish Liturgy (Notes Queries 41). The manuscript was said to have a resemblance to the Roman Liturgy in every essential part. The Mozarabic Liturgy is an essential part of the Spanish Christian History. Their rites continued to be used in the five churches of Toledo until 1842 when the Spanish government suppressed the churches throughout the country and the number of parishes dropped. Another essential part of the Mozarabic Liturgy is the Mozarabic chant which has a significant influence from the Gregorian chants. It was also a period of musical creativity in the part of being liturgical, which was still preserved at present time. It was intended to be sung by males, in accordance with the Roman Catholic Tradition and was monophonic and a capella. There were four chant categories, recitation, syllabic, neumatic, and melismatic. Chants were considered a method for spiritual development; it can be performed individually or in a group. Chants may involve throat singing as in Tibetan Buddhists and chanting mantras which are particular to Hindus. In the time of the Moorish invasion in Toledo there was a clash in the liturgical rites because the king and queen preferred the Roman rites so in order to decide which of the two were most favored by heaven they agreed to choose their own champions to fight in mortal combat. But when the Mozarabs won, the king and queen were annoyed by their triumph and later came to a thought that it is not appropriate to question theology in the form of a combat. It is only through a miracle that they will determine heavens response. Believing that their rituals were exceptional they proposed to make another deal where the two liturgies were thrown into fire while each party prays to heaven. The one which will not be burned will be considered the most favorable to heaven. The Roman ritual came out scorched but the Toledan remained on the spot where it was thrown and remained without injury. The Mozarabic ritual was then preserved and followed for a long period by their descendants until the copies of the rituals were lost and no one was able to perform and understand the services which had caused disputation between them. Having the desire not to discontinue such significant custom, Don Francisco Ximenes, archbishop of Toledo, founded a Mozarabic chapel where Mozarabic services were to be celebrated. The chapel which still exists is ornamented with interesting Gothic frescoes which were still in a perfect stage of preservation. It represents various combats between Toledans and Moors, another is meticulously painted frescoes which shows the vessels that brought the Arabs to Spain(Gautier 127). One of the paintings represents the old Toledo during that time and information about the arms, costumes, weapons and architecture of their period in vast details. The cloisters, as well, were covered with frescoes. They surround a number of elegant and severe arcades of beautiful masses of vendure[à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦] (Gautier 127). Mozarabic architectures has absence of exterior decoration, diverse in the floor plans, the majority of the structure is emphasized in the small proportions/ carvings (segmented, ribbed of horseshoe transept, etc.). It was known that Mozarabic arts and architecture were a fusion of Christian and Arabic influences whereas the adjective Mozarabic was derived. These practices were seen in the artistic church architectures and manuscript designs. There were various buildings in Spain with Mozarabic influence but there were ones which were purely Mozarabic. Some e xamples were the Iglesia de San Miguel de Escalada (fig.1), east of Leon; the Ermita de San Baudelio (fig.2), beyond Berlanga de Duero in Soria province; and Iglesia de Sta Maria de Lebeà ±a (fig.3), on the east side of the Picos de Europa mountains. Various churches with Mozarabic characteristics were built during religiously tolerant periods across Al-andalus. Eventually, most of them were destroyed or damaged in the years of conflict and persecution between different communities. An important characteristic of the Mozarabs was that they stick to their customs, cultures and religion although they were not allowed to build new churches. The eighth century is a fundamental phase for Christian culture in Spain where numerous architectural and artistic customs arose with influences from early Christian and Carolingian Art. When the Mozarabs migrated to north of Spain they established many monasteries where a certain change in the regions concept in architecture, sculpture and painting occur. In his time, having studied the New Testament Apocalypse, he saw the signs which were to his belief the sign of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The Adoptionist movement which does not believe that Jesus is the Son of God is, to his view, the anti-christ. He wrote a letter to Archbishop Elipandus of Toledo about the error of his ways. To the latters annoyance, he wrote a letter to the Asturian abbot Fidel accusing Beatus of the sin of arrogance, being a lowly monk teaching ways to an Archbishop(Kinane 50). The archbishops words of sarcasm and name-calling might have served for Beatus to write the Apologeticum where he turned the Archbishops word back on him entwining words based from the Bible. He proved in his own logical form that Elipandus is the Antichrist which caused Doctrinal war and brought Elipandus to scrutiny throughout Europe. Beatus calculated the Second Coming of Christ based on the events in the Bible and had arrived to the conclusion that the 6th millennium from the time of Adam would be the end of days. In total, the Mozarabs religious culture had been of great influence in Spains customs and its arts and architecture. Although a minority group they have proved to have lived in what they believed and fought for it. They played an essential part in its religious history and had been a foundation of Christianity.

This example that occurs during the play is in the opening scene of act 1. Here we see Theseus warning Hermia not to disobey her father and advising her that Egeus created her and can "discreate" her if he chooses. Hermia is reminded that Athenian law provides that a father shall have total control of his daughter’s life until the daughter is married. Even though Hermia does not want to marry Demetrius, the law says she has no choice and must conform to her father’s wishes. If Egeus’s authority hadn’t been the supreme authority, than Hermia and Lysander wouldn’t have had to flee Athens for their love. The other major example of conflict with authority is also partly responsible for the friction that occurs in the play. This example occurs in the fairy world between Oberon and Titania. Deciding on a certain career has been difficult and very challenging. Going through elementary school and middle school and deciding what career path way I should take, the first two that caught my attention were anesthesiologist and general surgeon. As a child, I never thought that I would want to go to these fields. As a student, I sometimes have my ups and downs in school but that doesn't stop me from doing what I love. In my opinion school is like the next level of a game and I must do my best to beat that level. Sometimes it's tough but I'll manage somehow.
